South Australia has passed new laws allowing same-sex parents to be formally recognised on birth certificates.

The reform replaces the previous “co-parent” term, giving families the option to list parents as mother, father or parent.

Introduced by Greens MLC Robert Simms, the legislation allows two mothers to be recorded equally on their child’s certificate for the first time.

The changes will apply retrospectively, meaning families can request updated birth certificates reflecting the new wording.

Supporters say the reform better represents diverse family structures and marks a significant step forward for LGBTIQ+ recognition in South Australia.

The move brings South Australia closer to other Australian jurisdictions that already recognise same-sex parents through more inclusive birth registration processes.
