South Australia has announced a royal commission into artificial intelligence, aiming to examine both the opportunities and risks of the rapidly developing technology.
Premier Peter Malinauskas says society is at a critical point where governments must decide how AI should be used and regulated.
The inquiry will investigate AI’s impact on education, jobs, healthcare, public services, the arts and essential infrastructure.
It will also consider whether restrictions or new laws are needed to protect the public while allowing innovation to continue.
The royal commission is expected to cost around three million dollars and will deliver recommendations to guide future AI policy.
Experts believe its findings could influence AI regulation across Australia, not just in South Australia.
