Artificial intelligence-powered drones could soon become Sydney’s newest tool in the fight against shark attacks, following a series of frightening incidents along the city’s coastline.

Developed by Ninox Robotics, the advanced 4.5-metre drones can patrol beaches for up to 12 hours continuously and cover distances of up to 150 kilometres.

Using AI technology, the drones are designed to detect sharks in real time and instantly alert lifeguards, helping to protect swimmers before danger strikes.

The proposal comes after five shark attacks in Sydney since September, including a recent great white shark attack at Coogee Beach that left a woman critically injured.

Authorities say they are exploring all available options to improve beach safety, while the company believes a combination of large and small drones could provide comprehensive coastal surveillance.

If approved by the New South Wales government, the AI-powered systems could begin monitoring Sydney’s beaches as early as this summer, offering a new layer of protection for beachgoers.
