Smart glasses are rapidly becoming more common in Australia, but their ability to discreetly record video and collect data is raising serious privacy concerns.

The issue has gained attention after Kmart’s $89 Anko Smart Glasses sold out within a week of their release.
The glasses can record high-definition video, take photos and connect to smartphones.
The Australian Government has asked the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner to investigate the potential privacy and safety risks associated with the technology.
Additionally, experts warn that people may not realize when they are being recorded, while questions remain over how images and other personal data are collected, stored and used.
Federal Attorney-General Michelle Rowland has asked Australia’s privacy commissioner to urgently review the technology and consider whether existing privacy protections are strong enough to deal with the risks posed by camera-equipped smart glasses.
