A historic moment in South Asia’s tourism industry unfolded on January 10th with the opening of “Amba Yaalu,” Sri Lanka’s first 100% female-staffed tourist hotel.
Nestled amidst a mango plantation with 457 TJC mango trees along the serene Kandalama Reservoir, the hotel draws inspiration from the novel Amba Yaaluwo and the golden era of Sri Lankan cinema.
Managed by “Thema Collection,” the hotel’s launch was celebrated with a vibrant ceremony attended by dignitaries, including embassy officials and tourism leaders, and blessed by two female Buddhist monks.
Chandra Wickramasinghe, Chairman of “Thema Collection,” highlighted the project as a testament to women’s capabilities in the hospitality sector.
Hotel manager Madhuwanthi Adhikari expressed her pride in leading this groundbreaking initiative, while head chef Kaushalya Batagoda, an Anuradhapura native, shared her excitement about bringing her culinary expertise to the venture.
Reflecting a vintage cinematic theme, “Amba Yaalu” features design elements inspired by Sri Lanka’s film heritage, including a retro-style restaurant, an old movie theater, and displays of antique film equipment.
This innovative property offers a unique and nostalgic experience, symbolizing empowerment and cultural preservation.
