The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has decided not to attend today’s special meeting of opposition party representatives convened to discuss forming control over local government (LG) bodies where the National People’s Power (NPP) lacks a majority.
Leaders of several opposition parties reached a consensus yesterday to collectively establish authority in municipal councils, urban councils, and Pradeshiya Sabhas where they hold a combined majority.
A meeting among the general secretaries of the relevant parties has been scheduled for later today to further these discussions.
However, the SLPP announced that it will not take part in the talks, while reiterating its commitment to supporting the effective functioning of local government institutions.
The SLPP also clarified that it has no intention of forming alliances with any political party to gain control of LG bodies.
