A group of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) organisers have urged former President Maithripala Sirisena to lead efforts to unify the party.
The organisers have made this appeal on two separate occasions, requesting Sirisena to either take up the chairmanship or at least support the unification process if he chooses not to lead.
The affiliated organization ‘Api Sri Lanka’ has also formally requested Sirisena’s involvement in guiding the SLFP toward unity.
Sirisena has yet to respond directly, stating he will consider the request after the upcoming Local Government elections.
The SLFP is currently facing multiple internal crises, compounded by ongoing legal disputes involving several senior party members.
Although former Presidents Maithripala Sirisena and Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga have stepped back from legal proceedings, cases filed by Duminda Dissanayake, Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, and Dayasiri Jayasekara are still pending.
In the meantime, the SLFP has announced its decision to contest the Local Government elections under the ‘chair’ symbol.
Political analysts suggest that a significant reorganization of the SLFP is likely to take place following the elections.
