The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT) reported over 17,000 social media incidents last year.
SLCERT engineer Charuka Damunupola revealed to Daily Mirror that 1,371 cases of online adult sexual harassment were reported.
He also highlighted 60 cases of child sexual harassment, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness and stronger protection measures for children.
Damunupola further mentioned 16 incidents of suicide or self-harm, stressing the critical need for enhanced online safety.
In addition, a total of 6,123 accounts were hacked, raising concerns about the security of personal data.
Furthermore, 673 cases of harmful and dangerous acts were reported, highlighting the need for a safer digital platform for all.
Experts have called for more robust laws and enforcement, as well as greater awareness campaigns, to protect Sri Lanka’s digital space.
