The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Board has confirmed that the ongoing tour of Pakistan will continue as planned, dismissing speculation of a withdrawal following a deadly suicide bombing in Islamabad on Tuesday that killed 12 and injured 27 people.
The decision was welcomed by Pakistani officials, who described it as a show of confidence in Pakistan’s security measures and the enduring spirit of cricket.
Team to Continue Tour
Sri Lankan team manager, speaking to Geo News, confirmed that no player will be returning home, adding that all team members remain committed to completing the series.
In a statement, SLC said that if any player still chooses to withdraw despite the reassurances, replacements will be arranged immediately to ensure the series proceeds smoothly. Such decisions, however, would be subject to formal review after the tour.
Security and Coordination Efforts
SLC acknowledged that some players initially raised concerns after the bombing, but said that the board had since engaged with them and provided assurances in close coordination with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and local law enforcement agencies.
The board has instructed all players, coaches, and support staff to continue the tour as planned, warning that any breach of the directive would lead to disciplinary action once the series concludes.
Pakistan Boosts Security for Sri Lankan Team
In response to the attack, Pakistan’s Interior Minister and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi ordered enhanced security for the Sri Lankan delegation. Naqvi is expected to personally meet the team to brief them on the strengthened security protocols.
The first ODI, held in Rawalpindi on Tuesday, proceeded as scheduled, with Pakistan narrowly defeating Sri Lanka by six runs. However, the remaining fixtures have been shifted from 13th of November and 15 to 14th of November and 16 due to logistical adjustments.
Government and PCB Express Gratitude
Pakistan’s Information Minister Attaullah Tarar extended appreciation to the Sri Lankan team, stating, “We are honoured by your presence and your commitment to the spirit of the game.”
He added, “Our special thanks to the Sri Lankan team for visiting Pakistan and displaying great sportsmanship.”
Sri Lankan Envoy Praises Security Measures
Following a meeting in Islamabad between Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi—attended by senior Pakistani security officials—the envoy expressed satisfaction with the security arrangements in place.
Naqvi reaffirmed that the Sri Lankan cricketers are “state guests” and ensuring their safety and comfort remains Pakistan’s “top priority.”
The Sri Lankan envoy also extended condolences to the victims of the attack and said he was “fully satisfied with the security measures” implemented for the visiting team.
