The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has successfully completed the first test flight of its upgraded Kfir C12 fighter aircraft at SLAF Base Katunayake, marking a significant milestone in the modernization of the nation’s air combat fleet.

The test flight followed an extensive programme of ground validation, systems integration and technical testing carried out under the Kfir modernization project.

The event was witnessed by Defence Ministry Secretary Sampath Thuyacontha, Air Force Commander Bandu Edirisinghe, senior Air Force officers and representatives involved in the upgrade programme.

The Kfir fighter aircraft, operated by No. 10 Fighter Squadron and popularly known as the “Lion Cub,” has been a key part of Sri Lanka’s air defence capability since 1996 and played a vital role during humanitarian operations that concluded in 2009.

Implemented in partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), the project upgrades four Kfir C2/C7 fighter aircraft and one TC2 trainer aircraft to the advanced Kfir C12 standard, extending the fleet’s operational lifespan while significantly enhancing its combat capabilities.

The upgraded aircraft is equipped with a modern glass cockpit, advanced avionics and enhanced mission systems that improve navigation, communications, precision strike capabilities, mission planning and overall situational awareness.

According to the Air Force, the modernization will reduce pilot workload, improve mission effectiveness and provide enhanced air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, strengthening Sri Lanka’s air defence readiness and its ability to safeguard national airspace and maritime boundaries.
