A high-level forum was recently held at the Cinnamon Lakeside Hotel in Colombo to promote powerboating in Sri Lanka and explore its potential to boost industry and tourism.
Deputy Minister of Industries and Enterprise Development, Chathuranga Abeysinghe, attended the event along with representatives from the Chamber of Marine Industries of Sri Lanka (CMISL), the Lanka Powerboat Association, and the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM), the global authority on powerboating.
Despite its global appeal, powerboating remains an underdeveloped sector in Sri Lanka. While the Lanka Powerboat Association has launched several initiatives over the years, most lacked coordinated national backing.
The forum examined the feasibility of building a local industry for manufacturing powerboats and related equipment, with aspirations to tap into international markets.
Discussions focused on the regulatory environment, global standards, and quality control to ensure Sri Lankan products meet international expectations.
As a result, a joint roadmap will be drafted with input from the Ministries of Industries, Sports, and Tourism to advance the sector in a structured and impactful way.
