SL to scrap Para tariffs on US imports

In an effort to maintain access to the U.S. market, Sri Lanka has proposed removing para tariffs on U.S. imports.

The move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed reciprocal tariffs, including a 44% tariff on Sri Lankan goods.

Although a 90-day pause was later introduced on these tariffs, it did not apply to imports from China.

Sri Lanka is actively seeking relief from the U.S. and has begun exploring diplomatic channels to resolve the matter.

An all-party meeting was held before the New Year to develop a united strategy to address the tariff issue.

To reduce the trade imbalance with the U.S., Sri Lanka is considering importing fuel from American companies.

Currently, Sri Lanka exports goods worth around US $3 billion to the U.S., while importing only about US $300 million.

A high-level Sri Lankan delegation is set to visit Washington DC this month for World Bank and IMF meetings, during which they hope to negotiate on the tariff issue.
