In response to the recent earthquake in Myanmar, Sri Lanka has dispatched a specialized 26-member medical and disaster relief team from its tri-services, led by Brigadier Punya Karunathilake, on a special flight today, 5th of April.
The mission, launched under the guidance of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake and supervised by Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal (Retd) Sampath Thuyacontha, aims to deliver critical aid to those affected by the disaster.
The swift deployment underscores the rapid response capabilities of Sri Lanka’s armed forces. In addition to disaster and medical assistance, the relief effort includes essential supplies donated by the people of Sri Lanka, with blessings from the Venerable Maha Sangha and Chief Prelates of the three Buddhist chapters.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, under the leadership of the Foreign Minister and Secretary to the Ministry, coordinated the diplomatic logistics of the operation. SriLankan Airlines also played a vital role by supporting the transportation of personnel and aid supplies to Myanmar.
