SL sees surge in tourist arrivals, highest since 2018

In January 2025, Sri Lanka recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals in a single month for the second time in its history, with 252,761 visitors.

This marks the highest figure since January 2018, according to Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA).

The previous record was set in December 2018 with 253,169 tourists.

When compared to earlier years, the January 2025 number stands out, as only 238,924 tourists arrived in January 2018 and 208,253 in January 2024.

India was the largest contributor to this surge, with 43,375 tourists, followed by a significant number of visitors from Russia, England, China, Germany, France, and Australia.

The SLTDA Chairman emphasized that, on average, each tourist spends about Rs. 40,000 per day in Sri Lanka.

Additionally, he assured that there are enough hotel rooms to accommodate the growing influx of tourists.
