SL sees sharp rise in Dengue, Chikungunya, and Influenza cases

Sri Lanka is currently witnessing a sharp rise in mosquito-borne diseases, particularly dengue and chikungunya, along with a growing number of influenza cases among children.

Consultant Pediatrician Dr. Deepal Perera of Lady Ridgeway Hospital told the Daily Mirror that the spread of dengue and chikungunya—both transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes—presents a major public health challenge.

Health authorities are urging the public to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds and to seek prompt medical attention if symptoms such as high fever, joint pain, or body aches occur.

Dr. Perera also reported a notable increase in influenza cases, especially among children, and advised parents to watch for symptoms like fever, cough, vomiting, and diarrhea.

He emphasized the importance of early medical intervention to prevent complications.

Officials recommend preventive measures including maintaining proper hygiene, using mosquito repellents, and wearing long-sleeved clothing to minimize exposure.

In response, the government has launched public awareness campaigns and intensified vector control programs to curb the spread of these illnesses.
