Sri Lanka remains committed to neutrality and actively contributing to regional peace and stability, stated Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, during the 26th ASEAN Regional Forum.
Minister Herath emphasized that neutrality is vital for small states like Sri Lanka, strategically positioned in the Indian Ocean, to navigate a polarized global environment.
“We do not wish to be drawn into conflict or forced to take sides. Respect for sovereignty and the rule of law is crucial for the survival of small states,” he said.
He highlighted the challenges posed by major power rivalries, militarization in the Asia-Pacific, threats to the rules-based multilateral order, and global inequality fueled by selective decoupling and protectionist policies.
On security concerns, Minister Herath addressed the resurgence of conflicts, the rise of multilateral alliances in the Asia-Pacific, the threat of nuclear weapons, and the growing influence of cyber operations and strategic communications.
He stressed the importance of adapting military strategies, governance, and regional cooperation to address cyber threats, digital engagement, and global challenges effectively.
Minister Herath called for innovative diplomacy, crisis management, and peacekeeping strategies to maintain open dialogue and promote stability in an increasingly volatile world.
