President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated yesterday that the government would amend existing laws if anyone attempts to challenge or disrupt the public mandate.
Speaking at the 60th anniversary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), he asserted that the National People’s Power (NPP) holds a clear majority in 152 local bodies and will establish councils in 115 of them during their first sittings.
The President emphasized that the NPP, having received the people’s mandate, has the legitimate right to form local councils where it holds a majority.
“If anyone acts against the mandate, we are prepared to respond constitutionally, legally, and politically,” he said, warning that the government possesses a two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend laws if necessary.
He criticized opposition parties for contesting elections in fragmented groups, only to attempt unity after the results.
“They are a collection of scraps. Let them try to govern for a few months. If they contest united in the future, they won’t even secure the limited results they achieved now,” the President added.
