Sri Lanka’s ‘National Tax Week’ officially begins today (2nd of June ) with the theme “Badu Shakthi,” focusing on increasing public awareness and education on taxation.
The inaugural ceremony will be held at the Presidential Secretariat, with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake presiding over the event.
The government aims to use this week, running from June 2 to June 7, to inform citizens about the importance of paying taxes and to encourage broader participation in the tax system.
Deputy Commissioner General of the Inland Revenue Department, P.K.S. Shantha, stated that the campaign seeks to promote tax literacy among the general public.
‘National Tax Week’ has been launched as part of the government’s broader effort to expand the country’s tax base and ensure better compliance.
A key focus will be on educating citizens about the use of the Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN), which is now mandatory for vehicle registrations and some types of bank accounts.
Over 10 million Sri Lankans have already obtained their TINs, which can be easily verified through the Inland Revenue Department’s website.
The initiative reflects a shift toward greater transparency and accountability in the country’s tax administration.
Public events, information sessions, and digital campaigns are expected to take place throughout the week to support the tax awareness drive.
Authorities hope that National Tax Week will help build a stronger culture of tax compliance and financial responsibility among citizens.
