The Government of Sri Lanka has firmly rejected allegations of genocide during the final phase of the country’s conflict, stating that such claims are not supported by any credible national or international authority.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued on May 14, these accusations are based on misleading information and appear to be politically motivated, particularly for electoral purposes in Canada.
The Ministry highlighted that in April 2021, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs officially confirmed that it had not made any determination of genocide in Sri Lanka. It also noted that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) has been designated as a terrorist organization by Canada since 2006, with the designation reaffirmed in June 2024.
Sri Lanka has strongly opposed the construction of a so-called “Tamil Genocide Monument” at Chinguacousy Park in Brampton, Canada, calling it misleading and harmful to reconciliation efforts. The government has urged Canadian authorities to halt the project, which it views as offensive to both Sri Lankan and Canadian communities.
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath met with the Canadian High Commissioner to formally express Sri Lanka’s objections to both the genocide allegations and the approval of the monument. The government maintains that such actions hinder ongoing national efforts to promote reconciliation, unity, and peace.
