SL consistently upholds international aviation safety standards

Sri Lanka consistently upholds the highest standards of aviation safety in line with the guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized UN agency that facilitates global cooperation in air travel.

Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Sagara Kotakadeniya, stated that maintaining airworthiness and safety standards is a continuous practice in Sri Lanka, regardless of aviation incidents occurring elsewhere in the world.

He emphasized that Sri Lanka’s aviation safety measures are not reactive but are proactively maintained in accordance with international norms and best practices.

Kotakadeniya acknowledged the crucial role played by ICAO in helping 193 countries, including Sri Lanka, develop a rapid and reliable global air transport network that connects people, cultures, and economies.

He noted that the ICAO’s ongoing updates to the Chicago Convention’s Annexes—covering communication, navigation, airport and heliport operations, and meteorological services—are key to ensuring the safe and sustainable growth of international aviation.

Mr. Kotakadeniya said Sri Lanka remains committed to these evolving standards to ensure safety, efficiency, and resilience in the aviation sector.

Referring to the recent tragic air crash in India that claimed over 240 lives, Kotakadeniya said it is premature to comment before the investigation is complete but acknowledged that such incidents may offer valuable lessons for the global aviation community.
