SJB MPs file Bribery complaint alleging irregularities in ‘substandard coal’ imports

A group of Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MPs yesterday (26) lodged a complaint with the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption over the alleged importation of substandard coal into Sri Lanka.

SJB MPs Mujibur Rahman, Chaminda Wijesiri, Sujith Sanjaya Perera, and Kavinda Jayawardena visited the Bribery Commission to formally submit the complaint.

Speaking to the media after filing the complaint, MP Mujibur Rahman stated that the company concerned had violated two key conditions of the agreement: firstly, by supplying substandard coal to Sri Lanka, and secondly, by failing to deliver the coal within the stipulated timeframe.

He asserted that breaching these two primary conditions is sufficient grounds to cancel the agreement, but claimed that the government is attempting to justify the matter by arguing that it does not amount to fraud.

However, Mujibur Rahman stressed that such justification is unacceptable, noting that it has already been revealed that the transaction involved corruption.

He further stated that just as the Bribery Commission had carried out extensive investigations into allegations against the previous government, it should also take action to recover the Rs. 7,000 million in public funds allegedly lost due to the actions of the incumbent administration.
