Another Development Officer who was participating in a hunger strike opposite the Presidential Secretariat has been hospitalised after falling ill, bringing the total number of officers admitted to hospital to six.
The hunger strike, launched by a group of Development Officers demanding absorption into the teacher service, continued yesterday (01) for the seventh consecutive day. The protest is being carried out by members of the Union of All Ceylon School Development Officers, who say they have been serving in schools for the past seven years.
The satyagraha began on January 26, but organisers said the demonstration was escalated into a fast-unto-death after authorities failed to respond adequately to their demands.
Meanwhile, the protesting officers warned that if the President does not schedule a meeting to address their grievances by tomorrow (02), they will launch a large-scale protest outside the Presidential Secretariat.
