Electricity bills have now overtaken groceries as the biggest cost-of-living concern in Australia, with new research showing the growing financial pressure on households.
According to a study by iSelect, 86 per cent of Australians are worried about energy costs, while 57 per cent identified electricity as their top expense—surpassing groceries and transport.
Comparison expert Sophie Ryan said electricity remains a major concern as families continue to manage ongoing financial strain. She noted that many households are making small, practical changes—such as reducing heater usage or layering clothing—to cut down on power consumption.
Ryan highlighted that one of the simplest ways to reduce costs is by comparing electricity plans, though many people delay doing so. She pointed out that a significant number of households continue to overpay, especially those who have stayed with the same provider for several years.
Research indicates that households on older plans can pay considerably more than those who switch to newer offers, making regular plan comparisons an effective way to save money.
Experts also advise consumers to review their plans periodically, especially when notified of price changes or expiring discounts, as these moments present opportunities to switch to better deals.
Additional savings can be achieved through flexible payment options, such as spreading bills into smaller instalments, and by taking advantage of discounts for timely payments or online account management.
Overall, experts stress that regularly shopping around for better electricity plans remains the most effective and accessible way for households to reduce their energy costs.
