Namal Rajapaksa, National Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has alleged that the President has begun making statements resembling judicial verdicts from political platforms, warning that attempts to suppress public concerns through such rhetoric would not succeed.
He made these remarks while speaking to the media in Kalutara on May 3.
Commenting on the recent International Workers’ Day rally, Rajapaksa claimed that references to the Rajapaksa family and the SLPP featured prominently in speeches, reflecting what he described as the Government’s political focus.
He also criticised President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, alleging that instead of addressing issues such as workers’ rights, strengthening state institutions, and economic recovery, the President focused on remarks about imprisoning political opponents.
Rajapaksa described these comments as “shameful,” arguing that they reflect a decline in the dignity of the office of the Executive President and questioning whether such statements were appropriate for a May Day platform.
He further alleged that the President appears to believe that decisions made from a Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) platform can override public concerns, adding that any attempt to deliver “verdicts” from political stages and dismiss people’s issues would ultimately fail.
