Set aside ego and heed experts, Namal urges government

Namal Rajapaksa, National Organiser and MP of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, yesterday called on the Government to “leave aside narrow-mindedness and hatred” and listen to trade unions and medical professionals, while raising concerns over national security and economic challenges.

Speaking in Parliament, he warned that the underworld had “raised its head” amid a rise in killings and urged the Government to take effective measures to ensure public safety.

Rajapaksa criticised current tax policies, alleging that although the Government came to power promising to strengthen farmers and the rural economy, it is now reducing taxes on imported food, vegetables, and fruits, thereby undermining local producers.

“You promised to protect farmers and form farmer organisations. Today, strengthening farmers seems to mean importing food and boosting businessmen,” he said.

He also questioned the Rs. 10 billion allocation for paddy purchases, claiming that farmers are still unable to sell their harvest at fair prices. He further alleged that concerns raised by farmer organisations are being suppressed.

Rajapaksa pointed to delays in fertiliser distribution despite subsidy promises, unpaid compensation for crop damage, and unfulfilled housing pledges to affected communities. He claimed that some compensation cheques had been returned despite assurances that adequate funds were available.

“If you do not protect farmers and fishermen, the country will lose its direction,” he warned, linking their welfare directly to food security and economic stability.

He also raised concerns about 750 Sri Lankans selected for overseas employment in Israel under a Government quota who completed training but have been unable to depart due to administrative delays. He noted similar issues faced by workers bound for South Korea and urged authorities to intervene and ensure fairness and accountability.
