Scientists have revealed the discovery of a completely new colour, named ‘olo’, which they claim has only ever been seen by five people in the world.
Described as a vibrant blue-green shade, ‘olo’ cannot be perceived by the human eye under normal conditions. Its visibility requires laser stimulation that allows people to see beyond the standard range of human colour perception.
The breakthrough was achieved using a technique called the Oz Vision System, inspired by the green-tinted glasses worn in the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz. This system uses precise laser technology to expand the limits of what the eye can detect.
In a study published in Science Advances, researchers discovered that when the laser signals were deliberately “jittered” by just a few microns—millionths of a meter—the subjects reported seeing the laser’s natural colour in a new way, revealing the unique hue now known as ‘olo’.
This finding opens up exciting possibilities for future research into the limits of human vision and colour perception.
