
The United States–Sri Lanka Fulbright Commission (US-SLFC) has announced the opening of its 2027–2028 scholarship and fellowship applications for Sri Lankan citizens. These opportunities allow Sri Lankans to study, conduct research, teach, and engage in professional development in the United States.
Founded in 1952, US-SLFC promotes educational and cultural exchanges between Sri Lanka and the U.S., fostering mutual understanding and strengthening bilateral ties. Over the past 73 years, more than 2,000 Sri Lankan and American students and scholars have participated in Fulbright programs. The Commission also provides educational advising for studying in the U.S., including guidance on admissions, standardized tests, and internships.
The awards open for applications include:
- Fulbright Master’s Fellowship Awards/Program – For Sri Lankans seeking a Master’s degree in any discipline (except clinical medicine) at a U.S. university. Applicants must hold a 4-year Bachelor’s degree and have at least one year of professional experience. Deadline: May 31, 2026.
- Fulbright Visiting Scholar Awards/Program – For academics, artists, and professionals pursuing postdoctoral research, teaching, consulting, or collaborative projects in the U.S. Priority is given to projects that benefit Sri Lanka. Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent, with at least five years of professional experience, and a host institution in the U.S. Deadline: October 1, 2026.
- Fulbright Specialist Awards/Program – For Sri Lankan institutions to host U.S. specialists for 2–6 weeks to provide teaching, training, and capacity-building. Eligible institutions include universities, government bodies, NGOs, cultural institutions, and medical organizations. Deadline: Rolling.
- Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Awards – For secondary-level teachers to participate in a six-week program in the U.S., sharing expertise and gaining classroom experience. Applicants must hold a 4-year Bachelor’s degree and at least five years of teaching experience. Deadline: March 31, 2026.
- Fulbright Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Awards/Program – For mid-career professionals in leadership roles to pursue a ten-month non-degree program in the U.S., focusing on public service and development. Applicants must hold a 4-year Bachelor’s degree and have at least five years of professional experience. Deadline: June 30, 2026.
