The Supreme Court today nullified the interim injunction issued by the Court of Appeal, which had previously blocked the implementation of the former government’s decision to compulsorily retire nurses in four grades at the age of 60.
Additionally, the Supreme Court directed the Court of Appeal to reconsider the petition related to the matter, which had been filed by the Public Service United Nurses’ Association and its President, Venerable Murutthettuwe Ananda Thero.
The Supreme Court delivered the ruling after taking up an appeal filed by the Attorney General, who argued that the Court of Appeal had exceeded its authority in granting the interim injunction.
The ruling was delivered by a three-judge bench consisting of Justices Yasantha Kodagoda, Janak de Silva, and A.H.M.D. Nawaz.
The retirement age policy in question was introduced by the previous government, which mandated compulsory retirement for government employees at age 60.
