The Supreme Court today directed the petitioning party to take steps to reissue notice to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who has been named as a respondent in a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition.

The petition seeks an order to recover compensation funds that were allegedly paid unlawfully to former ministers and Members of Parliament whose properties were damaged or destroyed during the island-wide violence that followed the May 9, 2022 attack on the “Aragalaya” protest site.
The case was taken up before the Supreme Court in connection with allegations that the compensation payments were made in violation of the law.
