Salt prices to be regulated with release of imported stocks

The Sri Lanka Salt Manufacturers Association announced that salt will now be released to the market under newly established maximum retail price limits, following an agreement with the Consumer Affairs Council.

This decision comes in response to recent price fluctuations and aims to stabilize the market after the government eased import restrictions.

According to the Association, sufficient stocks of imported salt have arrived, and distribution of table salt has already begun, with the following maximum retail prices in place:

  • 1 kg of granular salt – Rs. 180
  • 1 kg of salt powder – Rs. 240
  • 400 g of salt powder – Rs. 120

While distribution has commenced, the Association noted that it may take a few days for the packaged salt to reach retail outlets across the country.

The initiative is expected to make salt more affordable and accessible for consumers islandwide.
