Sallay running rat fever risk: MP

Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday alleged that former State Intelligence Service chief Suresh Sallay, who is currently under detention, is at risk of contracting Leptospirosis due to poor conditions in his detention facility.

Addressing a media briefing, the Opposition MP claimed that Sallay is being held in a small room on the fourth floor where rats are frequently seen. He alleged that the former intelligence chief is forced to sleep on the floor while rats run across the room and that rat droppings are reportedly scattered inside the cell.

Jayasekara said these conditions could expose Sallay to rat fever and appealed to the government to ensure that he is treated in a humane and dignified manner.

“We urge the government to treat Sallay in a decent way, based on the accepted principle that all prisoners are human beings,” he said.

The MP also alleged that Sallay’s son has not been allowed to visit him since his arrest.

Sallay is currently being held under a 90-day detention order following his arrest in connection with investigations into the 2019 Sri Lanka Easter Sunday Bombings.
