Sajith Premadasa voices support for India’s Bid for permanent seat on UN security council

Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa has expressed strong support for India’s long-standing bid for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), describing it as a recognition of “global power realities.”

Speaking to ANI during his official visit to India, Premadasa said India’s inclusion in the UNSC would reflect “the practical realities of international politics.”

“Years ago, I openly advocated for India to be granted a permanent seat in the UN Security Council. This is not a new position for me,” he said. “I will continue to support that effort because India’s representation at the UNSC is both fair and reflective of its global significance. You cannot ignore or marginalise India.”

Premadasa’s remarks come as India continues to lead global calls for UNSC reform to make it more inclusive and representative of emerging and developing nations.

Responding to questions about Sri Lanka’s approach to the India-China relationship, Premadasa reaffirmed that Colombo values its “special strategic relationship” with New Delhi while maintaining friendly relations with all nations.
