Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today alleged that two containers carrying raw materials used for producing narcotic drugs were cleared despite prior warnings from foreign intelligence agencies. He urged the government to explain how these materials reached the producers.
“There are many issues surrounding this incident. We understand that foreign intelligence units had warned about these containers, yet they were released. This raises several questions: Were proper security checks carried out? If so, who conducted them? The government must reveal these details to the country,” Premadasa said during a meeting with a group of former MPs.
He further questioned the timeline of the release. “We need to know when these containers were cleared. Were they among the 323 red-labelled containers that were released earlier this year? The individuals and institutions responsible for this incident must be disclosed,” he added.
Premadasa, however, welcomed the recovery of chemical consignments suspected to be used in producing ‘Ice’, a highly addictive narcotic drug that has spread in Sri Lanka. Police recently discovered such stocks in Middeniya and Kandana.
