Sri Lanka’s Commonwealth Games gold medallist Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage has climbed to the number one position in the latest men’s javelin world rankings, creating history for Sri Lankan athletics.


The achievement comes after a series of outstanding performances on the international stage, cementing his place among the world’s elite javelin throwers.


Tharanga recently captured the gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland with a sensational throw of 89.75 metres.


His victory earned him 1,354 ranking points, lifting him to the top of the global rankings in the latest update.


Germany’s Julian Weber slipped to second place with 1,348 points, while Anderson Peters of Grenada remains third.


The historic milestone marks the first time a Sri Lankan athlete has reached the world number one ranking in the men’s javelin throw, further elevating the nation’s profile in international athletics.
