Roblox faces child safety review amid growing concerns over online risks

A popular online gaming platform, Roblox, is facing increased scrutiny from eSafety authorities amid growing concerns over child grooming, exploitation and exposure to harmful content.

Roblox had earlier pledged several child-safety measures, including making accounts private by default for users under 16, limiting adult contact without parental consent, and restricting certain chat features. Authorities have now announced plans to directly test these safety commitments to ensure they effectively protect young users.

eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said ongoing reports of risks to children have prompted closer monitoring and compliance checks, with potential penalties if the platform fails to meet its obligations. New online safety codes coming into force in March will also require gaming services to take stronger action against harmful material, grooming and non-consensual content sharing.

In response, Roblox stated that it has robust safety systems in place, including content monitoring, age verification, and communication restrictions designed to enhance protection for children and teenagers online.
