Cardinal Robert Prevost has been elected as the first American pope, marking a historic moment for the Catholic Church.
He is expected to make his first appearance on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica following his election as the new Supreme Pontiff.
As pope, he will immediately assume leadership of the Vatican and spiritual authority over 1.4 billion Catholics worldwide.
He is also set to deliver his first public address and the traditional “Urbi et Orbi” blessing to the crowds gathered in St. Peter’s Square.
