Rising divorce rates lead to increase in women-headed households

An academic has revealed that nearly 1.2 million families in Sri Lanka are headed by women, with the figure continuing to rise due to the country’s high divorce rate.

Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe, Senior Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Kelaniya, highlighted the vital role women play in Sri Lankan society during a panel discussion held on Friday.

She stressed the importance of economically empowering women, pointing out that strengthening their financial independence is crucial not only for the stability of their families but also for the progress of the wider community.
