Rise in smoking among SL women health risks underlined

Specialist Doctor Saman Iddagoda highlighted a significant rise in smoking among women in Sri Lanka, surpassing the rate among men.

Speaking at a media briefing at the Health Promotion Bureau (HPB), he noted a decline in smoking among men over the past 10-15 years.

He expressed concern over the increasing number of young women being diagnosed with lung cancer, attributing it to smoking.

Emphasizing that smoking is a direct cause of lung cancer, he urged the public, especially women, to be aware of its harmful effects.

Dr. Iddagoda cautioned that even if someone quits smoking today, they may still be at risk of developing lung cancer in the next 10-15 years.

He also revealed that various smoking products, beyond just cigarettes, contribute to the risk of lung cancer.
