Health experts in Sri Lanka have raised concerns over a significant increase in asthma cases among children, according to Chest Physician Dr. Asha Samaranayaka.
She attributed the rise to factors such as air pollution, shifting weather patterns, and environmental allergens, which are aggravating respiratory conditions in young patients.
Health authorities are urging parents to seek early treatment for symptoms like wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath to help manage asthma effectively and prevent it from becoming a chronic condition.
Dr. Samaranayaka also emphasized the need to minimize children’s exposure to common asthma triggers, including pollutants and dust.
On a global scale, 3,340 asthma cases have been reported, affecting 9% of children, 6% of adults, and 11% of youths.
