Regulate social media over ‘attacks on Buddhism’: National Bhikkhu Unity

National Bhikkhu Unity Convener Ven. Alapathgama Gnanarathana Thera has expressed concern that social media is increasingly appearing to act as though it is “taking the law into its own hands” in Sri Lanka, despite the country having a Supreme Court and a well-established legal system.

Speaking at a media briefing on the 27th, the Thera said recent social developments suggest that online platforms are beginning to influence matters beyond the country’s formal judicial and legal framework.

He called on the President to take firm action to regulate social media and prevent what he described as harmful attacks on the Buddha Sasana.

Ven. Gnanarathana Thera also emphasized that the Maha Sangha and the Buddhist robe have historically played an important role in safeguarding the country and its religious values.

Referring to historical figures such as King Dutugemunu and King Valagamba, he said past rulers had relied on the guidance and protection of the Buddhist clergy during times of national challenge.

He noted that Sri Lanka today still has strong legal institutions, including the Supreme Court and a respected legal community, but warned that social media is increasingly bypassing these systems.

He further stated that throughout history, national leaders have turned to the Buddhist clergy for moral and social guidance when addressing major societal issues.
