Register devices with IMEI by 28th Jan: TRCSL

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has announced that starting 28th of January, all radio frequency (RF) emitting devices, including those requiring IMEI registration, must be registered with the TRCSL to operate legally.

Devices such as cell phones, wireless networks, drones, and other sources of electromagnetic energy (EME) will need to be registered with the TRCSL by providing the relevant model number to comply with new regulations.

The decision was prompted by concerns over illegal imports of electronic devices, aiming to curb such practices, improve security, and streamline the tracking of mobile devices in Sri Lanka.

Registering IMEI numbers with the TRCSL will allow authorities to block unauthorized or stolen devices from accessing local telecommunications networks.

The TRCSL highlighted the illegal importation of unregistered devices as a source of significant tax revenue losses and emphasized that its primary responsibility is to take legal action against illegal traders.

After January 28, non-registered IMEI-enabled devices will no longer function on telecommunications networks, though the new system will not affect devices brought into Sri Lanka by foreigners.

Users who import new IMEI-enabled devices must register them through the TRCSL’s online system, while devices already connected to networks before the deadline are exempt.

To check a device’s IMEI number, users can send an SMS in the format “IMEI [space] 15-digit IMEI number” to 1909.
