The Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development has announced that the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund, set up to assist those affected by Cyclone Ditwah, has received more than Rs. 4.2 billion in financial assistance so far.
Secretary to the Ministry, Harshana Suriyapperuma, said the Treasury has recorded total contributions of Rs. 4,286 million, comprising Rs. 4,263 million deposited directly into bank accounts and Rs. 23 million received in foreign currency. He noted that overall foreign currency contributions now exceed USD 6 million.
Suriyapperuma expressed appreciation to well-wishers, entrepreneurs, organizations, businesses and Sri Lankans living overseas for their generous support.
He also said multilateral agencies such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the World Bank are considering further assistance for Sri Lanka’s rebuilding efforts, with details to be announced once finalised.
Highlighting the international response, he noted that contributions from North America were the highest, followed by donations from Australia, China, the United Kingdom, Germany, Bhutan, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Canada, New Zealand, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia and France. South Korea, he added, continues to be among the top contributors in terms of assistance, support and grants.
In addition to monetary donations, significant contributions in the form of goods and services have also been received, with Sri Lanka Customs recording these items.
“All funds are properly documented by the Treasury, and donated goods are promptly handed over to the Disaster Management Centre to ensure they reach the affected communities,” Suriyapperuma emphasised.
