Opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake has submitted a private member’s motion in Parliament seeking to prohibit political parties from using ethnic or religious labels in their names.

The motion is scheduled for debate on Friday, 10thof October , when eight private members’ proposals are listed on the parliamentary agenda.

According to Parliament’s Order Paper, Karunanayake’s initiative aims to prevent parties from adopting names that emphasize ethnic or religious identities. Supporters argue that the move would promote a more inclusive national identity in politics and help reduce communal polarization.

The motion is among several private members’ proposals set for discussion, including measures to strengthen the Sri Lanka Transport Board, integrate law and ethics into school curricula, and establish an insurance scheme for farmers.

Parliament is scheduled to convene from 7th to 10th of October , with 10th of October reserved for private members’ business.
