Sri Lanka’s Ramesh Tharanga has won the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw at the Commonwealth Games, ending the nation’s 20-year wait for a Games gold.
He secured victory with a remarkable throw of 89.75 metres, delivering a career-best performance on the biggest stage.
Tharanga triumphed over a world-class field that included Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra of India.
The achievement marks Sri Lanka’s first Commonwealth Games gold medal since Chinthana Vidanage’s weightlifting triumph at the 2006 Melbourne Games.
It is also Sri Lanka’s fifth Commonwealth Games gold medal in history and one of the country’s greatest achievements in international athletics.
The historic victory has sparked celebrations across Sri Lanka and added a proud new chapter to the nation’s sporting legacy.
