According to Commissioner General of Essential Services Prabhat Chandrakeerthy, the estimated cost of reconstructing railway lines damaged by the recent disaster is around USD 400 million.
He said the restoration of all affected railway lines will take time due to the extensive nature of the damage.
The Commissioner also stated that nearly 90 percent of the 236 health institutions affected by the disaster have now been restored.
He noted that the Spring Valley and Kandegedara hospitals have been relocated to alternative locations, while the Mahiyanganaya and Chilaw hospitals, which were among the worst affected, have been restored to normal operations.
However, he added that significant medical equipment, including CT scanners, suffered severe damage as a result of the disaster.
