Questioning former First Lady gives rise to more issues: UNP

A senior figure of the United National Party (UNP) has raised concerns over the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) questioning of former First Lady Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe, saying it has created several issues, including health-related risks.

UNP Chairman Wajira Abeywardena said that Professor Wickremesinghe, the spouse of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, had recently returned home following his heart surgery and has been advised not to receive visitors. He noted that even close political associates have refrained from visiting due to his condition.

He further added that Professor Wickremesinghe herself has been suffering from a long-term illness, and expressed sadness over the questioning process taking place under such circumstances.

According to reports, the CID questioning began at around 9 a.m. and concluded at 1 p.m.

Meanwhile, it is reported that the questioning has sparked further discussion, with claims that it may be linked to broader political issues currently facing the government.
