Qantas ordered to pay $120M for illegally sacking workers

Qantas will pay $120 million in compensation to over 1800 workers it illegally outsourced during the pandemic.

The airline announced it had reached an agreement with the Transport Workers Union (TWU).

In October, the Federal Court ordered Qantas to pay three former employees $170,000 in a test case.

Earlier, the High Court upheld that Qantas unlawfully sacked baggage handlers, cleaners, and ground staff in 2020.

Under the agreement, Qantas will establish a fund early next year to compensate 1820 affected workers.

“This is an important step in bringing closure, and I want to reiterate our sincere apologies to those impacted and their families,” said Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson.

Qantas said it was pleased to resolve the matter ahead of Christmas in partnership with the TWU.

The TWU called the deal a “huge result from members’ unity over a four-year court battle.”

In its 2024 annual report, Qantas allocated an extra $70 million for costs related to the case.

This contributed to its profit dropping from $1.7 billion to $1.25 billion this year.
