Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Vocational Education, Dr. Harini Amarasuriya, declared that all forms of harassment, including sexual harassment, violence, and undue pressure against university students, must end immediately.
She affirmed that the government is ready to take the strongest possible measures to ensure the safety and dignity of students on university campuses.
Dr. Amarasuriya made these remarks during her visit to the Kilinochchi campus of the University of Jaffna on 3rd of August where she held discussions with the Vice-Chancellor, staff, and students.
While acknowledging that students should enjoy freedom within universities, she emphasized that such freedom must be exercised responsibly and should not be restricted unnecessarily.
She stated that universities have a duty to provide a safe, supportive, and conducive environment for learning.
Although many institutions are undergoing physical upgrades and faculty development, she noted that concerns remain regarding their overall ability to support students effectively.
Dr. Amarasuriya pointed out that approximately 40,000 students enter the state university system annually after passing the Advanced Level examination.
She stressed the responsibility of university administrations to create secure environments for these students as they begin their academic journey.
During her visit, she focused on key student welfare issues at the Kilinochchi campus, including inadequate housing, lack of clean drinking water, and unreliable electricity.
She instructed the District Development Committee to resolve the long-standing drinking water issue within a month and ensure continuous monitoring.
“A student graduating with a traditional degree must be able to face the future with confidence,” she said, urging universities to evolve into hubs for research and postgraduate education.
The Prime Minister also called for stronger cooperation between students and university authorities to maintain harmony and stability within academic institutions.
