President’s fund to support education of migrant workers’ children

The President’s Fund has announced plans to introduce a scholarship programme to support the education of Sri Lankan children whose parents working overseas have died, become disabled, gone missing, or faced other hardships, the President’s Media Division (PMD) stated.

The initiative, launched under the theme “Leaving no one behind in education,” will be jointly implemented by the President’s Fund, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, and the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

The programme was unveiled during a discussion held at the Presidential Secretariat, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath, with Senior Additional Secretary to the President and Secretary to the President’s Fund Roshan Gamage also in attendance.

Officials noted that the only eligibility requirement for the scholarships will be Sri Lankan citizenship. Detailed guidelines for awarding the scholarships will be released soon.

The President’s Fund already operates a similar programme for children of victims of wild elephant attacks and aims to expand such welfare initiatives into other areas in the future.
