The Sacred Devnimori Relics of Lord Buddha, brought to Sri Lanka under the full patronage of the Government of India, were placed on exposition at the Gangaramaya Temple in Hunupitiya yesterday (04). President Anura Kumara Dissanayake attended the temple to lead the inaugural worship ceremony.
The sacred relics arrived in the country at around 1:00 p.m. today aboard an Indian aircraft that landed at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). The exposition was organised with the facilitation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the support of the Government of India.
Discovered during excavations in the 1960s at the historic Devnimori site in Gujarat, the sacred relics have never previously been taken outside India. According to the President’s Media Division, the opportunity for Sri Lankan devotees to venerate the relics was made possible following recent discussions between President Dissanayake and Prime Minister Modi.
The sacred Devnimori relics will be open for public veneration at the Gangaramaya Temple for seven days, from tomorrow (05) until February 11.
